Bee Cave will be “buzzing” in October Capitol Area Food Bank is experiencing severe shortages due to an increase in the number of people seeking help as a result of the economic downturn and Hurricane Ike. The Library’s goal is to collect at least 400 pounds of food, which will provide 320 individual meals. Drop off donations at the library during our regular hours from October 7-31. Financial donations are also needed, and may be made directly to the CAFB Web site at www.austinfoodbank.org.

The Library is pleased to announce the installation of a new public-computing system called Userful Desktop, raising the number of workstations available to our patrons from 4 to 12. With 2 PCs operating as mini-servers in a ―thin-client configuration, each computer runs a total of 6 workstations consisting of a keyboard, monitor and mouse.
Library users will now be able to log on to any available computer directly, using their library card number and PIN. Most sessions are for one hour at a time, with each library card limited to 2 hours of computer time per day. Worried about keeping track of your time? A small clock in the corner of the screen counts down your time remaining. Warnings will appear automatically at 10 minutes and 2 minutes before your session ends. If you need a few more minutes, please check with library staff to see if others are waiting for your workstation. Need sound? Bring your headphones from home to plug into the keyboard, or we offer disposable earbuds for $1. Need to save your work? Bring in a flash drive or a blank CD (blank CDs are also for sale at the circulation desk). Lost your library card? Get a new one at the circulation desk for $1. Forgot your PIN? Ask the staff how to reset it. More Computers in the Library!
Please be considerate… We share our beautiful space at City Hall with numerous city offices, At times, even municipal court is in session in the council chambers. When you leave the library, please be considerate of the many others in the building carrying out the business of the city, and take fussy children and extended conversations outside. Thank you! “Above & Beyond” Customer Service: In the past month we have had a number of visitors who are evacuees from Hurricane Ike. One evacuee from Beaumont, who was going to be in our area for a month, came into the library looking for the new and very popular book by Stephenie Meyer, Breaking Dawn. All our copies were checked out, with none due back anytime soon. However, one of our staff members, Michelle Benavides, brought in her personal copy of the book for the evacuee to enjoy while she was in Bee Cave. Thank you, Michelle, for such thoughtful and generous service!

October 7-21: Bring the pumpkin to the library to register for the contest and to put your entry on display. It’s free – there is no entry fee! October 22-29: The public will vote in three categories (best literary; most creative; and funniest) for their favorites from each division and for one ―best in show. October 30 at 5:30 pm: winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded (you do not have to be present to win). The divisions: children (up to six years of age); youth (ages 7-12); adults (ages 13 and up); and groups (families, organizations, groups, and businesses). Have questions or need more information? Please contact Angela at 767-6625 or apalmer@beecavetexas.gov.
Tips: Pumpkins should be firm with no blemishes and have an attached stem; be sure to wash your pumpkin. Acrylic paints work best but tempura (washable) paints are good too. Use a glue gun or straight pins to attach items to your pumpkin (never puncture it). Some accessory suggestions: foamies, stickers, yarn, make-up, cotton balls, fabric, cardboard, pipe cleaners, clothes, etc.
